The Argyle mine sat in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. It operated from 1983 until 2020 and was the source of the overwhelming majority of the world's pink diamonds. Pink and red stones were only ever a tiny fraction of what it produced.
No new Argyle pink diamond has been mined since 2020. Every stone that exists is every stone there will be.

The Source Has Closed
The Argyle mine closed permanently in November 2020. No new Argyle pink diamonds are being recovered, and none will be.
Their Own Grading Scale
Argyle pinks are graded on a scale specific to the mine — from Pale Pink through Pink, Pink Rosé, Pink Champagne, Purplish Pink and Vivid Pink to Red — rather than the usual colourless diamond scale.
Colour Comes First
With a coloured diamond, saturation and hue matter more than the clarity and cut grades that dominate a colourless stone. The deeper the colour, the rarer the diamond.

The Argyle scale runs from pale pink through to red. Deeper saturation means a rarer stone.

A pink diamond is set differently to a colourless one. The metal around it, the height of the setting and how much light reaches the stone all change how the colour reads on the hand.
Paul sets these stones at our own bench rather than sending them away, and will talk through how a particular grade will look in white, yellow or rose gold before anything is committed to.
